This pretty market town originated from a 7th century nunnery and is known for the area's Ryeland sheep whose wool, 'Lemster gold' was valued in medieval and tudor England. As well as the 12th century priory church and the former half timbered market hall, the Grange, now a centre for heritage and the arts, it has a good variety of shops - especially antique shops -, a specialist wool shop, restaurants, cafes and pubs, a swimming pool and leisure centre, and rail connections to the north, Wales, and London. We recommend Barber and Manuel for the best coffee in town, and The Grape Vaults, a true locals pub, for its beers and hearty, reasonably priced, meals.
